Introduction new DBTG secretariat and executive director
I have the honour to present myself as the new Executive Director of DBTG since 1st June 2019. I am very happy, also on behalf of my wife Korin Schalk who is assisting me in the Secretariat, to work with you in the Dry Bulk Terminals Group.
I started my career about 30 years ago in a commercial function in the Dutch rail industry and worked for NS Cargo (today Railion Nederland) followed by a commercial management position at EMO (Europees Massagoed Overslagbedrijf) which is today part of the HES group and a member of DBTG. I changed my job in 2009 to Sea Invest in Belgium where I managed the dry bulk and liquid bulk activities in Antwerp and Ghent. And since 2011 I started my own company in port and rail consultancy.

As the dry bulk market is very familiar to me I have the challenge to raise DBTG profile and help the group grow.
Furthermore I would like to thank Nic Ingle for his support during the last 3 years. He has arranged five Member meetings and did a good job on actual issues…….
Also I would like to inform you that we had a change in the Excom. Ryan Olson, who is leaving, is going to do a abatical journey. He will be replaced by Gary Martin, CEO of Naega. I would like to thank Naega for the continuous support of DBTG.

Conference DBTG Southampton 9-11 October 2019
The next DBTG Conference has been launched yet en we have put together an interesting program, covering a broad scale of items:
from IT developments for dry bulk terminals, Drugs & Alcohol Policies in various parts of the world to the completely changing world of our total supply chain and terminals as a conclusion of governmental and environmental pressure. Besides this, we will have lots of opportunities to exchange best practices and experiences with peer managers in our own Dry Bulk Terminals circle. Of course we have succeeded in finding two interesting port and terminal tours (Southampton and Portsmouth) and a surprising venue for our Meeting Dinner onboard HMS Warrior in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard.

Has steel a future in Europe?
“The European steel industry is now being put to the test like never before”. These are the words of Geert van Poelvoorde, Executive Vice President, CEO Europe Flat and ArcelorMittal President, at European Steel Day, European Steel Association (EUROFER) 2019.
CEOs leading steel companies representing the bulk of EU steel production sent a joint open letter to Heads of State and Government and to the EU institutions on Monday, 3 June 2019. The open letter highlights the challenges facing the steel sector in a climate of global overcapacity, falling domestic demand and booming imports.
